history records show that the spotted hyena, lion, elephant, black rhino, hippo, bushbuck, cape mountain zebra, red hartebeest and bontebuck are indigenous to the area. steenbok, duiker, grysbok, cape hare, rock rabbit, porcupine, genet, cape fox and mongoose continue to occur naturally on the reserve, as does the caracal which is the larges free roaming predator on the reserve. the main vegetation on the reserve consists of acacia karoo thorn trees in the low-lying areas with a mixture of fynbos on the higher lying areas.
